What is Retrieval Augmented Generation?

RAG works by integrating a retrieval step into the process of generating text with an AI model. It allows AI systems to access up-to-date and specific information that may not have been part of their original training data. This results in more accurate, relevant, and current responses. RAG also helps mitigate the problem of AI “hallucinations” or making up false information, as the model’s outputs are grounded in retrieved facts.

RAG is particularly useful in federal environments where access to specific, proprietary, or frequently updated information is crucial.

Proof of Concept

The solution consists of a cloud-like model with Dell Technologies providing the infrastructure of PowerEdge with NVIDIA GPUs, running Ubuntu Server. Kubernetes simplifies management and connects to PowerScale using the Container Storage Interface driver to provide persistent LLM and RAG volumes.
